They're at it again. A couple of weeks ago I opened my mail and found what turned out to be the beginning of a smear campaign against House DFL Candidate Shawn Hamilton. The glossy but ominous brochure, funded by the Republican Party of Minnesota, shouted about a marijuana ticket allegedly received by Hamilton several years ago in - yes, this is the real name - Cloverleaf Park here in Blaine. I blogged about that here, but you can check out the mailer in all it's smarmy glory here. Going after a DFLer for a minor marijuana offense seems rather< ironic given Norm Coleman's old habits, or George Bush's habits, but I guess when you're a member of a rapidly imploding movement made up almost entirely of rabid poodles, you do what you can.

So this afternoon I open my mail and am greeted by a full-color brochure of filth from my friendly "Republican Party of Minnesota". The mailing, targeted at DFL candidate for state representative Shawn Hamilton, drags up an incident in 2003 in which Hamilton was allegedly fined for smoking marijuana in a public park.

It's sad that the Minnesota GOP is reduced to dragging up minor pot offenses to discredit their opponents. It's sadder still that some here in Blaine may be stupid enough to fall for it. The mailing is just dumb enough to turn off some people - particularly independents, I would think, who often don't go along with the whole drug war thing - but "pot" is also a code word for "crazy liberal", and that may be the dog whistle they're really going for here.
