Gander Mountain endorses McCain-Palin & Norm Coleman?

The Big E's picture

The Duluth News Tribune reports that Republican VP pick Sarah Palin "First Dude" Todd Palin and Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) will hold a rally in the Gander Mountain parking lot in Duluth, MN.

"For a business to be endorsing political candidates is wrong," said hunter Scott Wolff, a supporter of U.S. Sen. Barack Obama. He promises to boycott Gander Mountain.

Other local Obama supporters are trying to organize a counter-rally in the Gander Mountain parking lot.

Gander Mountain spokesman David Ewald said the company grants use of its stores to any group that supports outdoors issues. If a pro-Obama group wanted to use the parking lot, he said, Gander Mountain probably would agree — as long as the group promoted the company's principles.

Actually, last time I checked, it was illegal for companies to endorse political candidates. So what are Gander Mountain's principles? What is it about Sarah Palin that meets their principles?

Our stores feature national, regional and local brands as well as the company's owned brands. Our store associates' extensive product knowledge and outdoor-related experience enable us to provide unmatched customer service. Nearly all of our stores have a Gander Mountain Lodge, which is an in-store meeting room where we provide hunter and firearms safety classes, outdoor-skills seminars and which we make available for community use. Focused on our "We Live Outdoors(R)" culture, Gander Mountain dedicates itself to creating outdoor memories.

This is all I could find on their website that seems pertinent to any principles.

illegal, really?

Hi, this is interesting. Why would it be illegal for a privately-owned business to participate in politics?
Target gives bajillions of bucks to Coleman and Bachmann, and that is not illegal. Why would use of a parking lot be illegal?

Just curious...

PACs...

Companies cannot make contributions to political candidates, but they can throught their PACs. There is little chance that this gift can be considered to be from Gander Mountain's PAC.

Gander Mountain, really?

I've supported Gander Mountain as it's Minnesota-based company. I'll need more information before I change my mind. There is a difference between "endorsement" of & "contributions" to a candidate. The best thing for Gander Mountain to do is to take the call from the "MN Sportsmen for Obama" campaign and schedule another rally. It'll bring waaay more people & business to them than the anemic Coleman followers.
