MinnPost: local comedian Sarah Janecek opines

The Big E's picture

How is it that Republicans can be so funny? I got my latest laugh over at MinnPost who had an opinion piece by Sarah Janecek, a local aspiring comedian. In Janecek's opinion, we Democrats need civility lessons. "This is like being told to stand up straight by the hunchback of Notre Dame" Gordon Galloway once famously quiped.

In recent months, Garrison Keillor has been a prime offender. In his nationally syndicated columns, he has called President Bush an "incompetent frat boy" and Rupert Murdoch a "schlockmeister." Neither characterization tells us anything substantive about what's wrong with their thoughts or actions.
(MinnPost)

What's so hilarious is that "incompetent frat boy" is a deliciously biting, accurate and scathing description of the worst President in the history of the United States. This is why Garrison Keillor is a great writer and Janicek is a comedian although a not very successful one. Furthermore, what better one word description is there of Rupert Murdoch than "schlockmeister." I bet she even watches Fox News regularly so you'd think she'd know how accurate of a description it is.

While Janecek handicaps herself by limiting her material to things she finds that Democrats say that she thinks is objectionable, her sanctimoniousness really carries her limited material. I have a few suggestions for more material for her routine, because I want her to be a successful comedian.

The biggest suggestion is to look at some of the things that Republicans have said. Republicans have made John Stewart a household name! Janecek's career could go much further if she can overcome her "partisan" shackles and expand the material she's willing to consider.

This next guy is a Rudy Giuliani campaign official in New Hampshire talking about Rudy:

"He's got I believe the knowledge and the judgement to attack one of the most difficult problems in current history and that is the rise of the Muslims, and make no mistake about it, this hasn't happened for a thousand years. These people are very dedicated and they're also very very smart in their own way. We need to keep the feet to the fire and keep pressing these people until we defeat or chase them back to their caves or in other words get rid of them."

(Talking Points Memo)

When reporters followed up on his hate-filled, non-civil statement, he didn't retract or apologize. He went even further:

“I don’t subscribe to the principle that there are good Muslims and bad Muslims,” Deady told me by phone from his home in New Hampshire. “They’re all Muslims.”
(The Moderate Voice)

She could just read Katherine "The Hairdo" Kersten's comedic stylings at the Star Tribune. The Hairdo is often offensive and uncivil. She regularly attacks anyone or anything non-white and non-Christian.

Glenn Beck has had his moments too! You can't get more uncivil than Beck.

No offense, and I know Muslims. I like Muslims. I've been to mosques. I really don't believe that Islam is a religion of evil. I -- you know, I think it's being hijacked, quite frankly.

With that being said, you are a Democrat. You are saying, "Let's cut and run." And I have to tell you, I have been nervous about this interview with you, because what I feel like saying is, "Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies."
(Media Matters)

I think that's a pretty good way for Janecek to expand her material. I think she's got real potential as a comedian and it would be really great to have more Minnesota comics out there getting famous on the national stage. I mean, I only want to help.

sure, folksy radio writers are entitled to opinions

GWB is a chump Gary Keillor points it out so what.
