More gloom and doom for Republicans

The Big E's picture

I've been documenting how poorly things are going for the Republicans in the 2008 election. The Republican brand has been so severly damaged by 8 years of Republican greed, corruption, lawlessness and incompetence that not much seems to be going right for them. They can't compete financially with the Democrats and face another landlslide loss in November.

More evidence of their desperate plight has surfaced in the last few days.

We saw this six weeks ago, when he [Sen. John Ensign, Chair of the NRSC] decided to put the onus of fundraising on his own party.

Chuck Schumer and the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) have recently placed television buys totaling approximately $44.8 million in targeted Senate races across the country. I will not allow our Republican candidates to be outspent by the DSCC this cycle. Therefore, it is my intention to give the NRSC's IE Unit the total budget to match the DSCC dollar for dollar in every state they run ads.

While I am aware we do not currently have the funds to match the DSCC, I am giving our IE Unit this budget on faith - faith that my Republican colleagues will step up to the challenge and transfer the funds necessary to remain competitive with the Democrats. I have informed my colleagues that it is now up to them.

See? He promised to match DSCC spending, but since the NRSC didn't have the cash, it was up to his Senate colleagues to fund the effort. Laughable.

Well, he's back with some more whine. You see, it appears his recruitment efforts failed because his fellow Republicans just weren't patriotic enough.

While Al Franken will be getting plenty of help from the DSCC, Norm might have to go it alone if his fellow Republicans don't love America enough. Funny that they'd use the same rhetoric that they'd used to brow-beat Democrats with on their own.

Another point is that the NRSC is in way better shape than their House counterpart. The NRCC trailed the DCCC by a 10-to-1 ratio at the end of June. Republicans are burning through their money faster and are having to pay to retire debt.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee outraised the National Republican Congressional Committee for the second straight quarter, and has nearly 10 times the cash on hand of its Republican counterpart.

NRCC Chairman Tom Cole (R-Okla.) announced Thursday that the committee raised between $13 million and $14 million for the second quarter, and had around $2 million cash on hand at the end of June.

Meanwhile, the DCCC raised about $17 million for the quarter, and banked $19 million at the end of June.

Democrats are so far ahead of Republicans in Congressional fundraising that its becoming comical.

On the local front, MN Republican State House Minority Leader Marty Seifert sent out this fundraising plea:

"If the House Republicans lose five seats this November, the few remaining of the House Republicans will be no more than empty carcasses."

"If we lose five seats, the chance of maintaining a veto ever again under our governor is done, finished, extinct!"

"There is a clear and present danger in this purple state we call home and it is the possibility of a DFL controlled House and Senate that can override every veto by Governor Pawlenty. If that happens, we may as well be extinct."

Yet, somehow MN Republican Party Chair Ron Carey's head doesn't explode when talks his smack about how Republicans will be winning in November.

Furthermore, President Bush has reminded everyone of his Administrations invasion and occupation of Iraq by condemning Russia for wanting to do the same thing. And he's reminded everyone that the Bush Administration tortures people by condemning China for human rights abuses. Some day a Republicans head is simply going to explode from the cognitive dissonance, but for now it is simply business as usual.

Bush today:

"Russia has invaded a sovereign neighbouring state.... Such an action is unacceptable in the 21st century.... We have no doubts about it. This is a deliberate attempt to destroy an entire country and change the regime."

Right. Invading a sovereign state to destroy a country and change the regime isn't acceptable in the 21st century. Good to know.
