Peggy Flanagan ends campaign for 58A seat
Peggy Flanagan is withdrawing from the 58A race for the Minnesota State House. Joe Mullery can rest easy this time as he's off the hook. She cited her Mom's declining health as the sole reason. Here's the letter she sent to her supporters:
It is with a peaceful yet heavy heart that I am suspending my campaign for the 58A State House seat. This campaign season has renewed the promise of a strong, progressive government for millions of people across the country, and the Northside of Minneapolis is no exception to that.
I originally decided to seek the DFL endorsement for MN House of Representatives because of the deep value I place in inclusion and civic participation to build power in under-represented communities. Doorknocking in the bitter winter cold, talking with voters on the phone and at neighborhood events have only fueled my belief in the Northside and our potential to raise the quality of life for everyone in the district.
While this passion is real and growing, I have also been dealing with some personal challenges. My Mom, who I have spoken of often during the campaign, suffers from Fibromyalgia, a disorder defined by widespread, chronic pain. Three years ago, she moved in with me as she was unable to continue working. She has recently undergone multiple surgeries as the pain has increased, and it has become obvious that her comfort and security will be my priority in the coming year as we search for long-term care options. Indeed, her struggles with the health care system and fight to make ends meet is a big reason I decided to run in the first place. I owe a lot to my Mom, and now it has become clear I need to be with her during this time.
My dedication to building power for under-represented communities on the Northside remains unwavering. I am fully committed to building a lasting movement for social change, and if the right opportunity presents itself, would welcome the opportunity to run for elected office in the future.
I want to thank each and every one of you for your amazing support and investment of your time, talent and financial support. I am humbled by the people who have been connected to this campaign, and hope that I have not let you down. I would especially like to thank Congressman Keith Ellison and State Senator Linda Higgins for their strong and courageous support throughout my campaign.
We have changed this district for the better by bringing a fresh message and new level of accountability to our current representative. We hit the streets and talked with voters who haven't had someone at their door in many years, if ever. We organized and mobilized large numbers of new caucus attendees, and blocked the endorsement of a 12 year incumbent, sending a message that Northsiders expect more than the status quo. We have accomplished much, and for that I thank you.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly. I look forward to a summer and fall with you on the campaign trail in support of Barack Obama, Keith Ellison and all the other great progressive leaders in our community!
Sincerely,
Peggy Flanagan

Cant say I am suprised
Even though there was no endorsement, I think Peggy had some blips in her pedigree. Her early support of charter schools doesn't reflect well with being on a school board. Mullery is a good representative of the north part of North Minneapolis, and I am glad to see he can concentrate on whoever the right sacrifices before the altar of Mullery.
school board seat?
Any indication if she wants to run for her school board seat? She'd have to run against the endorsed candidates in a primary at this point, right?
Doubt it
Judging by what she told me and the letter she wrote, she'll be taking care of her Mom.
