Is Norm's Pal Jeff a Tax Cheat?
And if he was, would it surprise anyone? Now, some people are going to wonder why the ol’ Twoputter might suggest such a thing, so I’ll say this right now: the online D.C. Property Tax Records indicates that Norm Coleman’s crash pad has the “Homestead” tax classification. But, wait – didn’t ol’ Smokescreen claim he’s renting the basement? And didn’t Larson claim he was renting out the top? So how exactly does this property qualify for a Homestead Exemption? Let’s look!!!
I noticed this “homestead” issue, because my pal Michael Brodkorb was makin’ a big fuss defendin' ol' Smokescreen over on his “Family Values” website (which is noted for it’s genteel language and high decorum, but I digress). Folks, when rightwingers are raisin' a fuss, it gets me curious; perks my interest about what they're NOT fussin' about. Now, I say “flop-house”, because the way rightwingers describe Coleman’s flop-house, I picture damned near a dungeon. Why, to put ol’ Smokescreen’s crash pad in context, Michael links to a story about some Democratic D.C. Denizens, that occasionally have to kill mice. Also, I noted that while ol’ Smokescreen admitted to renting the basement, Michael posted that Coleman only rents the bedroom. Hey – I guess Landlord Larson just tosses in the rest of the use of the basement - you know, "on teh house"? And, what a basement! Let’s look at what the realtor had to say about this house and basement, in this (almost) Million Dollar Home:
An enormous living room gracefully flows into the banquet-sized dining room, both dazzled with sunshine and warmed by heart pine floors, fabulous custom moldings, and a stunning wood burning fireplace.
The chef’s kitchen, a caterer’s dream with its sleek stainless alliances and acres of counter, strolls out to a delightful back porch, a deep private garden, and that ultimate Capitol Hill amenity, a GARAGE!
Upstairs, the delicious master suite features a custom Italian marble bath, and two additional bedrooms (one with a private porch) and second bath are off a sky lit gallery-style hallway, beautifully lit with alabaster fixtures.
Downstairs, a huge English basement with a media center, office space, gorgeous custom marble and oak bar plus an airy guest bedroom and bath. (A C of O allows you the flexibility of an income unit).
Simply divine!(Coldwell Banker Realty)
I’d like to discuss for a second, this: (A C of O allows you the flexibility of an income unit)
Folks, a “C of O” in real estate, is “Certificate of Occupancy”, and what the realtor said is that the basement is set up to be a separate rental unit. And that’s what it’s being used for, right now, by Senator Smokescreen. What we have here is ol’ Smokescreen is renting a basement that is set up and licensed to rent.
Now, let’s take a quick look at ol’ Smokescreen’s landlord, Jeff “Landlord” Larson. What does Landlord Larson have to say about his use of his W.D.C. flop-house? From The National Journal:
As it turned out, he said, he decided to rent a portion of the basement apartment to Coleman and the top two floors to Rich Beeson, an FLS Connect partner who is on an unpaid leave of absence while serving as the RNC's political director. Both Larson and Beeson declined to say how much rent Beeson and his family are paying, except to say that it was "fair market value."
OK, that’s cool; everybody knows it’s a pain to get a room, especially when you’re loaded, so that's why you bought it. And things changed, so now you're renting the top half to one buddy, and the basement to another. No problem there. But: why are you taking the Homestead Exemption, Mr. Larson?
The following e-mail was sent to Landlord Larson’s office (a more specific voice message was also left):
I can be reached at (phone number and e-mail address)."
I also talked to the fine folk at the District of Columbia’s Real Property Services about this. I asked them how a property with two separate and distinct renters and an out-of-town owner could qualify for the Homestead Exemption?
“Ummm, Mr. TwoPutt, could you give us the property address and particulars?”
“Ummm, no problemo!!!”
So, we’ll see where this goes. A complaint has been filed with the District of Coumbia’s Auditors, and an e-mail and voice mail sent to Jeff “Landlord” Larson.
Stay tuned!!!

Good catch, TwoPutt!
Thanks for your work on this. It doesn't particularly surprise me that Larson has been trying to scam the system. Of course, he and his neocon buddies don't believe the wealthy should have to pay taxes in the first place.

Catch that semi
It looks as though this might be interesting. Here is another interesting thing in the Spanish/Greek language.
Words that end in -ma, are from the Greek language [in Spanish]. The word, although ending in a feminine -a, is actually a masculine word.
It is "el" and "problema," so it is "no problemA, [problema].
In the English language a lot of words that end in -ma are Dutch names. For example: Postema.
What does this have to do with Norm semi-renting, a semi-basement, and his semi-landlord, semi-claiming tax status?
Semi-mucho, as we semi-slide down the semi-intereting, semi-slippery slope, I semi-suppose.
RE: Jeff Larson, I.R.S.-taxable income
Good to see the homestead issue is under review by the DC property tax department. Now, may I suggest, the I.R.S see if the rental income has been declared on Mr. Larson's personal tax returns? Or perhaps he set it up as a rental investment, I can't wait to see what the rent is for the top 1/2 of this mansion. How stupid does he think we are? Oh, here's another think- does the 600.00 charged to Senator Coleman and the "market rate rent" charged to the FDLSer include utilities? Norm should shut his pie hole about the 10 x 10 room because, if in fact Mr. Larson rented out his legal apartment and imposed a restriction to Senator Coleman that he is only renting the bedroom and bathroom and not the remaining rooms of the legal apartment he is in violation of the C/O and it would no longer be a legal unit.
FEC contribution questions
If you search for Jeff Larson's FEC contributions, you will see him listed at his home and a P.O. Box (1324) address in Hudson WI, and various locations (probably businesses) in MN. You can also find his wife Dorene making contributions under both her married and maiden name (Kainz) from a MN address and from both the addresses in Hudson WI (the home and the P.O Box 1324 address). The strange thing to me is that you can also find contributions from a Jeff Kainz http://images.nictusa.com/cgi-bin/fecimg/?26950714277
and a Jeff Kaintz http://images.nictusa.com/cgi-bin/fecimg/?20035993629 both listing the same P.O. Box 1324 address. Does this person exist, or is there another explanation for this? I can see how Larson's wife Dorene can contribute under either her married or maiden name, but I don't think it is explainable how Mr. Larson can contribute under his wife's maiden name.
Sure thing Tommy2Inch, your not full of sh*t at all.
Tommy,
Let me get this straight.
Your saying that because of a noboby blogger in Minnesota, that the Washington D.C. property serivces completed an entire investigation in under 1 1/2 days, it would have had to been done by the 3rd beacause of the holiday, updated the website and levied fines?
Thats would mean that they did not even contact him to verify your claim. Because there is no way they mailed out a letter from D.C. to the Hudson PO Box and got a reply in 1/2 a day.
And lets just say that in purple sky land where you live, that they did have a letter delivered to a PO Box, the letter was picked up , read and replied to in only a half day. That would give a government red tape machine 1 day wrap everything up.
Seriously? You can’t actually think anyone would believe you.
BTW. I’m using your own timeline. You sent the e-mail at 10:12 am Central time, so actually they started, investigated, completed , updated the website AND imposed fine in only 13 hours.
hahahahahahahaha
Check for yourself
If you don't believe it.
According to District of Columbia records, https://www.taxpayerservicecenter.com/RP_Detail.jsp?ssl=0734%20%20%20%200085
Jeff Larson is "* Not receiving the Homestead Deduction". This IS a change from a few weeks ago.
Nice work Tommy!!
