Ethics Complaint Filed Against Coleman

It’s official – an Ethics Complaint has been filed against Senator Coleman. And it’s been filed for the old-fashioned reason – ol’ Smokescreen’s EARNED it. Just who does ol’ Smokescreen think he’s fooling?

Well, ol’ Smokescreen’s not fooling C.R.E.W. – the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. Here’s a snippet of what they have to say:

The Senate gifts rule generally prohibits members and staff from accepting gifts, but has two exceptions under which they may accept lodging: if based on personal friendship or, as long as the giver is not a lobbyist or foreign agent, if the gift constitutes personal hospitality. Because the relationship between Sen. Coleman and Mr. Larson appears to be more business than personal, the gift would not be permitted under the “personal friendship” exception. Because Mr. Larson does not live in the townhouse, but rents it out to others, he is not hosting Sen. Coleman and “the personal hospitality” exception would not apply.
(C.R.E.W.)

Here’s the .pdf copy of the complaint that C.R.E.W. filed, today.

Thank God for C.R.E.W. - Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

Will this get as much coverage as Franken's tax problem?

Franken's "tax problem" was a matter of his incompetent accountant paying taxes in New York and Minnesota that should have been paid in other states. A professional accountant should know better but this one didn't.

It would be difficult to argue that Coleman's sweetheart rent arrangement is the fault of someone else who should have known better. This looks like a far more serious infraction.

But I'm guessing that the Coleman story will see the front page only once and then disappear from the cycle, destined to be rememberd only by political junkies by the time election day rolls around.
