Norm Coleman and the MN conservative base

The Big E's picture

The conservative base is not happy with Senator Norm Coleman (R-MN). I've been reading some of what the right wing blogs have been saying about him (and no ... I'm not going to link to them). They see him as someone willing to grant amnesty to illegal aliens and, generally, as an unreliable supporter of conservative causes. Immigration is a huge issue for the Minnesota conservatives and it threatens to tear the Republican Party to shreds.

Initially, Norm was a reliable trooper for Bush keeping his partisan voting record high. Despite his loyalty to President Bush, the conservative base are not happy with him. Aside from immigration, he's co-sponsored a global warming bill. Even admitting that global warming is real is a bad move in conservative circles.

Norm has always claimed he's a staunch conservative when in front of conservative crowds, but this doesn't seem to matter. Maybe its his communication style. He rarely states things directly and clearly. He always seems to parse, obfuscate and triangulate his positions. Even when it doesn't seem he needs to. From a progressive perspective, his use of language is maddening as he works so hard to be nuanced so that at some later date he could take another position on an issue and claim he's always been consistent.

Maybe the conservative base have problems with his communication style, too.

They want a clear stance from him on immigration, the global warming hoax, the war in Iraq, accountability in government, tax cuts and etc. He already passed the pro-life litmus test. They want that followed up with leadership on these issues.

They haven't gotten it.

Corporatism

Corporations in pursuit of profits, with no concern for the community, environment or shareholders, will encourage and heavily utilize cheap immigrant labor. So wages and benefits have been in a downward spiral. I am not faulting the immigrants who want jobs. This has been going on a long time, it causes a desperate bind. And Coleman is part of the Republican politicians in power who never made the tough choices, instead making the default choice of letting the whole situation get worse. This is the first time that the Republican party is actually demanding accountability. Maybe Republican votes can see the pattern of lack of responsibility and accountability.
