DFL U.S. Senate Candidates on Almanac

Minnesota DFL Senate Candidates Al Franken, Mike Ciresi, and Jim Cohen were on Twin Cities Public Television's Almanac last night. Here is video of them talking about three big issues - the Iraq War, Gay Marriage, and Global Warming:

Interesting discussion

All 3 seemed pretty good. But what's with Mike Ciresi's comments on gay marriage? Who exactly is proposing that we force religious denominations to do anything on this issue? That was a very odd answer...

it was more than odd...

It's a right-wing talking point -- they want to conjure up images of jackbooted thugs forcing churches to perform unions they don't believe in. No gay marriage or civil union law does that because of a little something called the separation of church and state (perhaps Ciresi, Esq. has heard of this?). Civil union and gay marriage laws are about *the state's* definition of marriage. Period.

What the hell was he talking about? Noah Kunin has a great post about it at http://www.blanked-out.com/

Until his campaign clarifies, we'll just have to assume Mike Ciresi is going to parrot right-right talking points on gay issues.

Clearly Ciresi is referring to

the secret campaign by Unitarians like myself to force god-fearing men to marry each other. It's our deepest desire, and we breathe each day to accomplish it.

In all seriousness, that comment is a major strike for him. If he's willing to use Limbaugh logic there (I've heard righties use that line more than a few times), where else will he use it? He needs to rethink that one.
