Norm votes against energy independence and renewable energy

The Big E's picture

On Thursday, Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) voted against the The Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax Act of 2007. The Republicans, as usual, threatened to filibuster a bill they disagreed with. Sen. Harry Reid, as usual, agreed to let their mere threat force a vote of cloture. It should be noted that Spineless Harry has only forced the Republicans to actually filibuster once out of the almost 100 filibuster threats in the 110th Congress. The cloture motion failed 48-46 with 6 Senators absent.

Here's what the bill would have done:

Moving the United States toward greater energy independence and security, developing innovative new technologies, reducing carbon emissions, creating green jobs, protecting consumers, increasing clean renewable energy production, and modernizing our energy infrastructure, and to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide tax incentives for the production of renewable energy and energy conservation.

Norm has received poor report cards on environmental issues throughout his career which isn't surprising considering that Big Coal, Big Oil, the nuclear power lobby and many other polluters contribute large amounts to his campaign.

His attempts to moderate his anti-environmental votes and positions is merely an election year charade.
