Republicans do not like African-American candidates
I know what your thinking. You think that this is a rare Obama post from me. I'm sorry to disappoint.
However, I have found a nearly quintessential example of how diseased and squalid the Republican Party has become. If there are any African-American Republicans in Congress, I'd be surprised. There are no African-Americans running serious campaigns challenging any Democrats that I am aware of. MN-05 happens to have a sucker who is going to get destroyed by Keith Ellison this November. Her name is Barb Davis White. She and the few people helping her campaign are not particularly happy that she is getting absolutely no help from either the state or national arms of the Republican party.
This "slave mentality thinking" i.e.; "Be good you Black Republican's while our White friends are in town" does not fly with me or the tools I have in place to distribute this message "top-of-mind" to the general public and national news affiliates.
(Independent Business News Network)
Threatening to "finish" the Davis White campaign is like threatening a misquito minutes before it is about to become a smudge on the windshield of a Mac truck. When Republicans have a rare non-white get elected, they trot them out. Endlessly. Bobby Jindal is a perfect example.
However, they have no plan to recruit minorities into their party. If they did don't you think they'd be helping Ms. Davis White build up the party in Minneapolis and its inner suburbs before she becomes splattered? This little story exemplifies how they are the party of racism, xenophobia, incompetence, greed, lawlessness and short-sightedness (Did I forget anything?).

Why limit yourself E?
You wonder if there are any African American members of Congress, but you might as well expand that to Senator or Govenor. Heck, why not just throw in all minorities too, and ask the same question?
From the Politico:
Just a few years after the Republican Party launched a highly publicized diversity effort, the GOP is heading into the 2008 election without a single minority candidate with a plausible chance of winning a campaign for the House, the Senate or governor
It is also, quite fitting, that in this Olympic year, the Republicans are breaking records:
As George W. Bush winds down his presidency, Republicans are now on the verge of going six — and probably more — years without an African-American governor, senator or House member.
So, 400+ congress folks, 100 Senators, 50 Govenors. 0 African Americans in six years. Priceless.
Take care,
Alec

Justice will only exist where those not affected by injustice are filled with the same amount of indignaation as those offended.
After Katrina
When racism is as blatant as it was in Katrina, any person of color knows the Republican party will abandon them at any stress point.
Katrina
Grace,
that Guru Louisiana General who went into Katrina after everyone else f-ed it up is now a consultant for handling hurricane type disasters. He was on CNN, and it was just amazing his number one priority for handling a disaster. Almost all he talked about was how crucial it was to focus on helping the poor, disabled, and elderly, recognizing that they probably did not have the resources to evacuate, either physically or financially.
Wha strikes me are two things. First, how common sense and humane this is. Secondly, how it is diametrically opposed to the way the conservtives hadnled it and characterized it. To them, the people who did not get out were dumb, lazy, and crimminal. How can you expect anyone to solve a problem when they have so little respect for those they are serving.
Take care,
Alec

Great point, Alec!
"Justice will only exist where those not affected by injustice are filled with the same amount of indignaation as those offended."
And that's EXACTLY why I'm a Democrat. These days, the GreedOverPrinciples party has a de facto platform of "I got mine, Jack - sucks to be you."
