I have been following the illegal warrantless wiretapping controversy and the attempts by Congress to cave in to Bush Administration pressure by gutting the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The Bush Administration wants their illegal actions sanctioned after the fact by Congress. Furthermore, they want they telecoms who aided and abetted their illegal activity to get off scot free as well.

Until February it looked a done deal. Spineless Harry Reid and Jello-Jay Rockefeller ram-rodded legislation written by the Bush Administration through the Senate. Reid is supposed to be the Democratic Majority Leader and although Rockefeller claims to be a Democrat, the truckloads of telecom cash in his campaign coffers convinced him to side with the Bush Administration and against the American people's best interest.

Thankfully, enough House members stood up to the Bush Administration in February. I didn't have high hopes at all. I expected a capitulation once again and was pleasantly surprised that the Bush Administration's illegal wiretapping remained illegal.

Now House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer is conspiring with the Bush Administration along with Bush-Dog Democrats like Rep. Chris Carney (D?-PA) to grant the telecoms their retroactive immunity and allow the Bush Administration to conduct their illegal wiretapping. Glenn Greenwald reports that an ad campaign has begun to halt this miscarriage of justice and abuse of our constitutional rights.

The ad campaign aimed at Carney comes at a time when there are increasing numbers of reports that the House Democratic leadership, spearheaded by Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, is working to reverse one of the only victories they have had since being given control of Congress in 2006: namely, their refusal to pass the Cheney-Rockefeller FISA/amnesty bill and, instead, to insist on their own, far superior bill which would make modest changes to FISA and allow the telecoms to submit in secret all exculpatory evidence they have to a court. For weeks, reports have suggested that Hoyer, with the prodding of a handful of Blue Dogs such as Carney, has been negotiating a bill that they will call a "compromise" but which will, in reality, guarantee the end of the lawsuits brought against telecoms and vest the President with the the vast bulk of the warrantless eavesdropping powers he has been demanding.

Why does the Democratic Leadership continue to appease the worst administration in the history of the United States? Democrats are winning special elections with campaigns promising to stand up to the Republicans ... why can't they see that? Why can't they see how unpopular illegal wiretapping of Americans phones and emails is?

Why do purported Leaders of the Democratic Party like Steny Hoyer want to hurt America? Why won't he stand up for the values that this country stands for?

I understand why Carney wants to hurt America ... he's BFF with Richard Perle.

Carney is a so-called "Blue Dog" Democrat who continuously sides with the Bush administration and supports its most radical policies. In addition to his leading role in demanding warrantless eavesdropping and telecom amnesty, he has repeatedly voted against timetables to end the war in Iraq. He is a close associate of Douglas Feith, with whom he worked on pre-war "intelligence" at the Rumsfeld Pentagon, and Carney still claims that "there were links between Iraq and Al Qaeda." Unsurprisingly, then, Carney has spoken out against Congressional investigations into those responsible for pre-war intelligence "failures" (which would include himself and Feith), calling such investigations a "major distraction." Among his most enthusiastic supporters in 2006 was Richard Perle.

In 2006 the people sent the Democrats to Congress to stop this Administration. On every important issue, they have failed. The occupation of Iraq continues. The wiretapping continues. They took impeachment off the table. They have allowed the Bush Administration to stonewall every single investigation. Joe Lieberman is still allowed to chair a committee.

Harry Reid allows the Republicans to simply threaten to filibuster to kill bills. He spineless acquiesces and calls a vote of cloture which always fail. Only once has he forced the Republicans to actually filibuster. The Republicans have threatened the filibuster over 100 times.

Now Hoyer is joining Spineless Harry, Jello Jay and the Bush Dog Democrats in attempting to harm America. Why?
